Consumer Tips

Use Coatings:

Any exposed surface can corrode. Bare surfaces exposed to water or moist air should have paint, wax or an oil film applied to them. To apply coatings properly:

  • Prepare surfaces as thoroughly as possible. The cleaner the surface, the better a coating material will adhere.
  • Follow the manufacturers' instructions and specifications carefully.
  • Remember, to obtain the desired results from inhibitors, waxes, and other coatings, the surfaces to be protected must be cleaned and prepared properly. After proper surface preparation, you must apply the protective materials in accordance with the manufacturers' specifications.

Remove corrosion as soon as possible:

When rust and other by-products of corrosion form on metal surfaces, they are unsightly and potentially detrimental. There are many cleaners and rust removers available in markets and hardware stores that will remove corrosion products from household items. If corrosion does occur, you should deal with it quickly to prevent extensive damage from occurring. Americans spend billions of dollars every year on losses caused by corrosion, money that could be saved by quality workmanship, proper care, and maintenance. A little time and attention will go a long way to preserving the beauty and usefulness of products that would normally rust or corrode without proper care.

Corrosion affects many of the things that you take for granted and use regularly in your daily life. We hope these tips help you maintain the beauty and safety of your home for many years to come.
