Department of Defense Corrosion Conference 2011 July 31-August 5, 2011, La Quinta Resort & Club, La Quinta, CA

Message from the Chairman

Daniel J. Dunmire, Director, Department of Defense Office of Corrosion Policy and Oversight, and Conference Chair

Welcome to the 2011 Department of Defense Corrosion Conference. Held every two years in various locations throughout the United States, this year's conference will take place from July 31st through August 5th at the La Quinta Resort and Club, a Waldorf Astoria exclusive property, near Palm Springs, California. Continuing the tradition from the very first Corrosion Conference, which has been held every second or third year since 1967, the technical lead of the conference is rotated among the military departments. This year's technical lead is the U.S. Army.

Starting in 2005, the conference purpose was expanded from equipment corrosion prevention research and development to equipment, infrastructure, and policy with participants from the services, defense agencies, Coast Guard, NASA, allied partners, academia, and industrial sectors. Joining us for 2011 is Mr. LeVar Burton, keynote speaker, and the theme is “Developing the Next Generation of Corrosion Professionals.”

This year's conference features five parallel generic tracks:

Under each generic track are several specialty sessions where the most popular will require several contiguous morning and afternoon sub-sessions to provide enough time for all approved briefings. The large number of approved briefings require that seven concurrent technical sessions/sub-sessions be programmed to run simultaneously. Hopefully this diverse array of topics will offer you the flexibility to attend those sessions having briefing topics of the most interest to you.

Some of the latest advances in corrosion prevention and control technology as well as policies to mitigate corrosion, including review of jointly funded Office of the Secretary of Defense and military department projects will be discussed in detail and new applications of these technologies will be featured.

Your attendance and participation at this year's conference is vital to your involvement in corrosion prevention and control as well as to the success of the conference itself. I look forward to seeing you in July in Palm Springs.

Sincerely,

Daniel J. Dunmire
Director, Department of Defense Office of Corrosion Policy and Oversight and Conference Chair
