Welcome Department of Defense Corrosion Conference 2009 August 10-14, 2009 • Gaylord National, Washington, DC Welcome to the 2009 Department of Defense Corrosion Conference! This conference is held every two years in various locations throughout the United States. This year's conference will take place from August 10th through 14th at the Gaylord National Hotel in the greater Washington, DC area, in the Maryland National Harbor south of the Wilson Bridge. Continuing the tradition from the very first Tri-Service Corrosion Conference, which has been held every second or third year since 1967, the technical lead of the conference is rotated among the military departments. This year's technical lead is the U.S. Navy. Starting in 2005, the conference purpose was expanded from equipment corrosion prevention research and development to equipment, infrastructure, and policy with participants from the services, defense agencies, Coast Guard, NASA, allied partners, academia, and industrial sectors. Therefore, it was deemed prudent that the conference be renamed effective this year. The conference will have three parallel tracks, offering the flexibility to attend sessions on those topics of most interest to you. Some of the latest advances in corrosion prevention and control technology, including review of jointly funded Office of the Secretary of Defense and military department projects will be discussed in some detail and new applications of these technologies will be featured. At the same time, the larger and more cosmopolitan community of attendees offers an excellent networking opportunity for both government and industrial participants. Some specific events of interest are the planned congressional staff and Government Accountability Office panel, the services' Corrosion Prevention and Control Executive panel, and the systems program executive office, program manager, and DoD acquisition policy panel. A member of Congress has been invited as the keynote speaker. There will also be presentations regarding corrosion education, the National Academy of Sciences, and international concerns. Interactions will also occur with officials from the DoD acquisition community, NACE International, SSPC, and many allies. In addition, the DoD Corrosion Forum will meet Monday morning and Friday morning before and after the conference begins and ends. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research will also conduct concurrent sessions during the week. Other events include tours, a free afternoon before the Wednesday evening banquet, and a wide range of corrosion prevention, control, and mitigation exhibits. Your attendance and participation at this year's conference is vital to your involvement in corrosion prevention and control as well as to the success of the conference itself. I look forward to seeing you in August in the nation's capital. Sincerely, Daniel J. Dunmire |
