Formation of NACE Student Sections
- The Member/Area Operations Committee (MAOC) has an operating manual for student
sections which shall be used in the formation and
operation of a student chapter.
- MAOC encourages the establishment of
NACE student sections as a means of introducing
college students to the importance of corrosion
control technology and to the career possibilities in
the corrosion field.
- A student section shall be sponsored by a
NACE section within which the proposed student
section is geographically located. Areas and
international regions can also sponsor student
sections.
- A student section may be formed at a college
or university providing:
- There are at least 10 Association
student members enrolled at that college or
university who wish to form a student
section.
- There is a faculty member who is a
member of NACE and is willing to act as
faculty advisor to the student chapter.
- The following should be considered in
forming a student chapter:
- The sponsoring group must have
individuals who are willing to visit the
college or university and to talk to
professors and students about NACE and
the possibility of forming a student chapter.
- The sponsoring group should
contact colleges that might be interested in
starting a chapter.
- The appropriate college department
should be contacted and the offer
made to speak to interested students about
NACE, the benefits of student membership,
the possibilities of careers in corrosion
related fields, and the impact corrosion will
have on their professional work as
engineers and scientists.
- The sponsoring section should plan
to have at least one student night annually
as one of the regular meetings.
- After a faculty advisor is found,
section officers should work with that
advisor to find several students interested in
forming the section and should provide
support for the organizational efforts.
- After the student section is formed,
one or more individuals from the
sponsoring section or region should be
given the responsibility of monitoring the
section and providing the necessary support
to keep the section active and effective.
- The following procedures must be followed
to form a student chapter:
- Individuals proposing to form the
student section should schedule an organizational
meeting. An officer of the
sponsoring section or region should attend
this meeting to provide guidance to the
organizing group.
- The faculty advisor should initially
chair the organizational meeting. The first
order of business should be to elect officers
from the student members present.
- The Petition to Form a Student
Section of NACE (Appendix C) must be
signed by the student members (a minimum
of 10 signatures). If any of those signing
are not NACE student members, their application
for membership must be attached to
the petition. The petition must be
countersigned by the officers and the faculty
advisor.
- The petition is submitted to the
section governing board. If approved, the
petition is submitted to the board of trustees
for final approval.
- If the petition is to form a student
section under a region or area, the petition
shall be submitted to the region board of
trustees for approval.
